Your Roof’s Worst Enemy

Contents

Rain, hail, wind, sunshine; you name the weather condition and we’ll tell you why it’s hard on your roof. Your roof is constantly exposed to threatening weather conditions. Of course, that’s his job so we don’t feel too bad for him. But it doesn’t hurt to show your roof a little TLC either. Believe it or not, summer weather can be one of the toughest seasons for your roof to deal with. The constantly changing weather conditions threaten your roof with extreme heat, rain, moisture leakage, and other types of shingle damage. The past month here in the Midwest hasn’t seen much rain, but we have certainly seen a lot of extreme heat. In fact, we set multiple records for both heat and lack of rain during the month of June. When we think of roof repair, we often associate it with leaks from rainwater. But we don’t always think about the weather conditions that lead up to that roof damage prior to the leak. Some day it’s going to rain again. I’m almost positive. I know we only reported about 9/100th of an inch of rain here inIndianapolis during the entire month of June, but this can’t last forever. And as soon as the rain finally comes, it’s possible you could experience leaks from your roof caused by cracks from hot weather on the pitched roof-lines, and other potential rotting flashing and sheathing cracks. Summer weather and other seasonal elements can be brutal on any building’s outer structure and, along with time are the biggest enemies to the integrity of your roof. However, if you conduct regular roof cleaning and roof inspections, stay on top of drainage issues and make an investment in protecting your roof, the long-term dividends will pay off immensely because you will prolong the lifespan of your home’s first line of defense against the elements. Your local Bone Dry office can conduct regular inspections in summer, spring, fall and winter to test for threatening issues that may be damaging the roof. Indianapolis, Nashville, Louisvilleand St Louis are especially prone to severe weather, including heavy snow runoff and pooling that can do a number on your shingles, as well as drying and cracking that comes from summer’s unforgiving warm temperatures. At the beginning of the summer, you should have your roof inspected for winter damage, and come up with a plan to weatherproof and protect your roof through the summer season and beyond. Checking for proper attic ventilation is one way to keep your roof cooler in the summer to save you money on energy costs. Without attic ventilation, heat and moisture build up in an attic area and combine to cause rafters and sheathing to rot, shingles to buckle, and insulation to lose its effectiveness. Proper attic ventilation will help prevent structural damage caused by moisture, increase roofing material life, reduce energy consumption and enhance the comfort level of the rooms below the attic. While you are inside, think about your roof and all of the hard work that he is doing to protect you and all of your most valuable assets. Bone Dry is happy to come perform a no-pressure inspection of your roof to determine if any damage has occurred, or to provide you with information are protecting your roof for the changing weather in the coming seasons.
