The Best Ways to Dispose of Your Old Roofing Shingles

Contents

Asphalt shingle roof replacement usually involves tearing off the old materials to make way for the new ones. If you’re thinking about leaving your old shingles on the roof deck and installing new ones over them, most contractors will agree that it isn’t a good idea. It’s bad practice to do so, and although you may save a bit on costs, it can easily shorten your new roof’s lifespan. By the time you need another replacement, you’ll also have to remove two layers of old shingles. This is why a full tear-off is necessary for a proper roof replacement project.

Old Roofing Shingles

So, what should you do with the old shingles that have been removed from your roof? There are several ways to go about their disposal, so it helps to know which method works best for your project.

Call in a Junk Removal Company

One square (about 100 feet) of shingles can weigh around 230 to 1000 pounds, and the average roof size in the country is about 17 squares or 17,000 square feet. If yours is bigger than average, it can easily have around 3,000 square feet of roof space. That’s a lot of old roofing material to dispose of, which is what makes junk removal services a good option for many homeowners.

Junk removal services typically use trucks that can carry up to 4,000 pounds of waste material, which is around the 2-ton weight limit. While this can be a good option to get rid of your old shingles, not all junk removal companies can accept them. Make sure to check with the ones in your area if they can take your old roofing materials.

Donate Your Old Shingles

Donated shingles are often used for charitable causes to roof low-income homes. However, only some old shingles can be reused depending on their condition. If you opted for an early replacement because you wanted to change the color or style, then your current shingles are likely still within warranty and in good condition. You can talk to your trusted roofing contractors about how you want your old shingles to be donated as they might know a few groups who can buy or take your old, good shingles for free.

Rent a Dumpster

Some roofing companies may also call in a dumpster rental to dispose of your old shingles and other roofing material. This is already part of the entire roofing quote and the roll-off dumpster can be rented for the duration of your roofing project. The most common dumpster size is around 20 cubic yards which can hold up to 4,000 to 6,000 square feet of shingles. But if you have a smaller home, consider getting a 10-yard dumpster instead as they can hold around 1,000 square feet of materials.
