Spring Roof Maintenance Tips for Homeowners
When the weather gets warm, it’s time to get the outside of your property ready for spring. Winter temperatures and storms can wreak havoc on your roof. Keep your shingles in top shape this year with these spring maintenance tips.
Survey for Signs of Damage
Take a walk around your property with special attention to the roof. Call a professional if you notice cracks, damaged shingles, broken eaves or bent gutters. Left unrepaired, these small issues can cause serious roof problems. The inspection should also take you into your attic. Look at sagging wood panels, discolored wood or other signs of water damage that could signify a leak. If you see evidence of rodent or bird infestation, your home is open to the elements through a crack in the roof.
Trim Tree Limbs
If limbs or branches come in contact with shingles, they can eventually cause enough damage to allow moisture into your home. Trim any trees close to your home and prevent this issue from shortening the lifespan of your roof.
Clear the Gutters
Even if your roof is in good shape, it still needs some up close and personal attention as the weather changes. Make sure the gutters are clear from leaves and other debris. If they become clogged, spring rains can’t flow away from the home and will accumulate on the roof, which can lead to leaks.
Clean the Roof
Leaves, pine needles and other debris can collect on the roof and encourage the growth of mildew, mold and moss, which can eventually degrade the shingles and lead to damage. Gently remove these items with a leaf blower or soft broom.
