Chimney Cleaning: Answering the Frequently Asked Questions

Despite the emergence of the more convenient gas- and electric-powered fireplaces, nothing feels quite like the ones that use wood. With their deep crackle and signature orange glow, they’re capable of sparking such as a sense of place in the imagination of many homeowners. Realism, however, comes at a price. Keeping your fireplace and chimney in good condition is important and shouldn’t be overlooked

Today, the certified chimney technicians* of Bone Dry Roofing answer the frequently asked questions regarding chimney cleaning, also called chimney sweeping.

Q: Why Is It Important to Clean the Chimney Regularly?

Whenever you burn a fire in your fireplace, byproducts from burning wood get deposited in the chimney flue. These include creosote and soot. Creosote is the flammable, tar-like residue that sticks inside the chimney unless removed right away. Soot, meanwhile, is the small, powder-like substance that gives smoke its characteristic black color and consists mainly of carbon. Regular cleaning and chimney sweeps are imperative to prevent these deposits from coming into contact with hot embers and causing a dangerous chimney fire.

Q: How Can I Tell If the Chimney Needs Cleaning?

Chimney cleaning must be done at least once a year, preferably during early fall. In addition to this, you need to have your chimney cleaned by a professional once you notice that the creosote deposits are more than a fourth of an inch thick with a honeycomb-like texture or you see soot fall into your firebox during a fire. Burning artificial logs or unseasoned firewood also requires you to schedule chimney cleanings.

Q: What Can I Expect During Chimney Cleanup?

During your chimney inspection and cleaning, our pros will first cover your floor and furniture with drop cloths to protect against dirt and debris. Then, they’ll use a specialized video camera to detect issues like water leaks and moisture problems. If there’s none, they’ll proceed with the actual cleanup, removing creosote buildup from the flue lining. If necessary, they’ll also clear any blockage from the liner, smoke chamber, firebox, and damper. A HEPA vacuum filter will also be used to remove dirt and debris.
