What to Ask Your Contractor: Roofing
Asking the right questions before hiring a contractor helps you feel confident, informed, and protected. These are foundational questions every homeowner should feel comfortable asking before any roofing work begins.
What is your workmanship warranty?
A contractor should carry both a product warranty AND one for their workmanship – ask about it! At Bone Dry, we stand behind the quality of our installation, not just the materials. A workmanship warranty protects you if something related to installation ever needs attention. Bone Dry Roofing offers a 25-Year Craftsmanship Warranty, also known as the Roof System Protection Plan, as well as material and manufacturer warranties.
Will someone from your company be on-site on installation day?
Make sure your contractor isn’t leaving you without someone to answer questions and supervise the work being done on your property on the day of your project. A dedicated Bone Dry project manager or supervisor is present to ensure your roof is installed correctly and your questions are answered in real time.
Is my ventilation system working correctly?
Proper ventilation plays a major role in roof performance, energy efficiency, and moisture control. We evaluate your system and explain what’s working and what isn’t.
Is it ok to re-shingle my entire roof over my existing shingles?
If a roofer says yes to this, run, don’t walk, in the other direction. A roofer who will install new shingles over existing materials is neglecting to address the other critical layers of your roofing system, such as ice and water shield, and could even be trapping moisture issues that are hiding by covering them up. Bone Dry Roofing will never take this shortcut.
Does my decking need to be replaced?
Solid decking is essential for a long-lasting roof, making it a very important part of the roof replacement process. If a roofer says they’ll install a new layer of shingles over top of your existing roof materials, this should give you pause. Bone Dry Roofing will inspect your decking thoroughly, on both the exterior by walking the roof, and the interior by inspecting the underside in your attic or crawlspace. A Home Solutions Specialist will walk you through any findings before any work begins.
Do you have proof of insurance?
Not enough people ask this question, and it can mean serious financial heartache if you’ve picked a company who is evasive when you ask. Bone Dry carries all required liability and workers’ compensation insurance, so your home and our team are fully protected.
What does the rest of my roof look like?
We believe in honest assessments, not quick fixes that ignore bigger concerns. Bone Dry Roofing will assess your entire roof to ensure any additional problems are spotted and taken care of.
Did you see any other leaks or issues in my attic?
Our inspections look beyond what’s visible from the outside to help prevent future surprises. If accessible, our inspector will get into your attic to check out the condition of your decking from the inside.
What warranty comes with the roofing product you’re installing?
As mentioned, a contractor should carry both a product warranty AND one for their workmanship, and this is an important question to ask. We explain our Roof System Protection Plan and manufacturer warranties clearly and make sure installation requirements are met to keep them valid.
What product are you installing, and why is it right for my home?
It’s important to ask about the type of products that will be installed on your home. Some are suited for your climate, some may not be. Bone Dry uses high-quality, reliable roofing systems designed for our climate and your home’s needs. We are more than happy to discuss the products we trust and the benefits they can provide.
How long has your company been in business?
This is an important question to ask to ensure the company you choose is credible, reliable and in good standing. According to the Small Business Administration, up to 80% of roofing contractors fail within the first two years in business.
In business since 1989, Bone Dry has more than three decades of experience protecting homes, built on trust and consistent quality.
Are there any unforeseen costs that could arise during this project?
If we discover things like damaged decking or ventilation issues, we explain them clearly, discuss options and get your blessing before moving forward.
Do you carry all necessary insurance to complete this project?
It is important for the company you choose to have all necessary insurance. This protects them, but also you. Bone Dry Roofing is happy to provide this documentation for your peace of mind.
What down payment is required?
Payment expectations should always be clear, fair, and outlined upfront. Bone Dry specifically does not require a down payment to begin work.
How long will it take to complete the work?
Depending on your specific needs and roof type, your project could take anywhere from a couple of hours to a few days. Roof replacement projects, for example, can sometimes be completed in one day, but often take two to three days to complete. Bone Dry Roofing provides realistic timelines and keeps you informed if anything changes.
Are you able to match my existing shingle color?
This is possible, but it is important to note that success will vary. Due to normal wear and weathering, your roof shingles may not look exactly like they did when they were originally installed. Sometimes, your specific shingle may have been discontinued, and we’ll have to do a best match. Our team does everything possible to blend repairs seamlessly with your existing roof and will discuss your options.
What to Ask Your Contractor: Masonry
If you’re planning chimney repairs, brick or stone restoration, or masonry walkway or patio work, these questions to ask your contractor will help you understand the scope, timeline, and long-term value of your project.
How long have you been offering masonry services?
This is an important question to ask, as you want to ensure you’re working with a reputable, credible, reliable and in good standing. While you may be tempted to throw a newcomer an opportunity, consider your timeline and needs. Bone Dry has had a dedicated masonry division for over two decades with experienced craftsmen specializing in chimneys, brick, stone, and concrete repairs.
What factors could cause the project price to change before or during the work?
Masonry projects may uncover hidden damage or structural concerns. A good contractor will stop work, document the findings and review them with you prior to continuing with the job.
How will you match my existing masonry materials and mortar color?
Proper matching preserves your home’s appearance and value, and it’s a detail that should be taken seriously. Especially on the exterior of your home, however, it can sometimes be challenging to get an exact match due to normal age and weather-related wear and tear. Your contractor should do their best to find the best matching materials for the most seamless look.
What is the estimated timeline for completion, and how far out is your schedule?
Your contractor should clearly communicate scheduling expectations, project duration, and when payments are due.
Is there a warranty included with the masonry work?
Your contractor should be able to speak to a workmanship warranty. This means they’ll stand behind their work and help to preserve your investment.
Why should I consider adding a masonry water repellent?
Water repellents help protect masonry from moisture intrusion, freeze-thaw damage, and long-term deterioration, helping extend the life of your investment. It is a service worth asking about!
