What to Compare
Materials. Not all roofing materials are created equal. Make sure that your roofer sends you a detailed list of all the materials that are going to be used. Obviously, your roofing contractor will include major items like shingles on the list, but you’ll also want to make sure that supplementary materials such as sealants, underlayment and even nails are included as well. This will give you a better idea of how much your roof will actually cost.
Warranties. While most roofing manufacturers will offer a material warranty, you’ll want to make sure that the roofer you’re thinking of hiring offers a workmanship warranty as well. A reputable roofer will have no problem standing behind their workmanship and will often offer a guarantee that’s similar to the length of the material warranty.
Incidentals. Here is where shady roofers will try to sneak in hidden fees for services such as cleanup and waste disposal. Be sure to compare this section on competing estimates carefully. You definitely don’t want to work with a company that’s going to leave a pile of old shingles on your driveway unless you pay extra to have them removed.
