How Can Storms Damage Your Roof?

Contents

Storm damage isn’t always as obvious as missing shingles or holes in the roof. Some of them aren’t readily visible but may cause problems down the road if not fixed by a roofing professional. In today’s post, local roofing company Bone Dry Roofing – Florida discusses the different ways storms can damage your roof and why you need to have your roof inspected after a storm.

 Storms Damage Your Roof

The Not-So-Obvious Signs of Storm Damage

Most people picture storm damage as torn shingles or severe damage caused by fallen trees, but these are extreme types of damage. One of the most common mistakes homeowners commit is not having their roof inspected after a storm because it looks fine. The following are some types of storm damage that aren’t as noticeable:

Loss of granules – Asphalt shingles feature a top layer of granules that, in addition to providing color, protects the asphalt layer from damage caused by UV rays. Extreme wind and rainfall can exert enough force to erode these granules, which can expose the asphalt layer to direct sunlight. If not repaired, these “bald” shingles can deteriorate faster.

Dents and punctures – Airborne debris, blown about by high winds, can have the same effect as moderate-sized hailstones on a roof. Sometimes they can hit a rooftop with enough force to puncture the roofing surface and allow water infiltration.

Wind damage – High winds can cause splitting or cracking of individual shingles. This usually takes the form of creases about an inch below the edge of the shingle above it. This can have a similar effect as granule loss or a puncture, depending on how severe the damage is. The roof edge is also vulnerable to wind damage, and this is usually where water infiltration happens during a storm.

Have Your Roof Inspected After Every Storm

Roofing professionals are trained to find roofing problems that will require repair, even ones that aren’t readily visible from the ground. Since roofs are exposed to constant wear, leaving roofing problems for later means the problem will only get worse. The sooner the storm damage is addressed, the less repair work will be needed. Your roof will also be less at risk of an unplanned replacement.

You’ll also need a thorough roofing inspection if you’re going to file an insurance claim. Most insurance providers require an accurate damage report and an estimate of the repair costs, both of which your local roofing contractor can provide.

I would highly recommend Bone Dry Roofing. We had our tile roof replaced with a new beautiful metal roof. Start to finish, the professionals at Bone Dry Roofing made our experience a pleasant one. The price was very competitive, scope of work was as promised and the end result was a beautiful roof which has made our home look more contemporary. Patrick held our hand the entire process, providing us with pictures daily of the progress, the crew were so hard working including Israel, Edgar, Jose and Hugo and made sure the job was done to our satisfaction. Great job!

My experience with Bone Dry roofing started a few days after hurricane Ian struck in2023. As I was clearing debris from my yard I saw one of their trucks across the street at a neighbors house. I went over and asked the man (Patrick Ormsbee) from bone dry if he could look at my roof and give me an estimate. He said that even though he was booked heavily he was instructed to help anyone that asked for it. He was very friendly, went up on the roof, took pictures and said he would have the estimate in a couple of days. I called Patrick multiple times with various questions over multiple days and as busy as he was he always called me back and answered my questions. This commitment to customer service is the reason I choose Bone Dry roofing to replace my roof. Weeks after I had my roof replaced there was a small problem. When I called Bone Dry they immediately responded, came out and fixed the problem. Excellent customer service! I highly recommend them.

Bone Dry Roofing completed my roofing project very effectively and efficiently. The job was to patch a hole which seemed easy but ended up being a big project due to the repair the previous owner of the home had done. The technician had no complaints and completed the job the correct way so no future issues would occur. I will definitely be using Bone Dry Roofing for any future roofing needs. Highly recommend!
